This book is a wonderful guide to help in all areas of our lives.

Good quotes, but what exactly is the point?
If you want a book that has interesting spiritual quotes, but doesn’t take a specific stand on any of them…this is your book; it’s really more of a "spiritual quote book" edited by a politically correct quorom of authors. It struck me that it was almost like I was sitting next to a hippie who has deeply studied religions, but thanks to all the pot they’ve smoked, can’t really decipher what the point of the quotes was in the first place, and who lives his life by none of them.

Don’t get me wrong, it has a lot of great quotes; however, if you have any inkling at all of what kind of spirituality you’d like to explore, you’re better getting a more specific book. This book hits in such a broad way as to make it’s chapters somewhat irrelevant in the final analysis. I understand that their goal is to cover what every major philosophical/religious idea is, but it seems kind of silly to have "modern humanist perspectives" next to Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, and Confucianist statements. It’s basically a poorly designed text book that was written without analytical analysis.

I guess that a lot of the book strikes me as more of a "nobody’s right" approach to spiritualism that is dangerously close to moral relativism. My feeling is that if you want to study what the great teachers, philosophers, and religious icons think, you’re better off studying them specifically, as this book tries to please everyone, and likely pleases very few.

A Step-by-Step Guide for Releasing Faces in Wood

Product Description

From transferring the carving pattern to preparing the wood and evaluating the various levels of depth, every cut of the carving process is carefully illustrated and explained in this beginner’s guide. Carvers will learn which tools are best for which cuts and why; how to create realistic eyes, noses, and other facial features; and how to add texture to their projects. Ten additional projects await once the first whimsical tree spirit is completed, each of which includes three styles of patterns: an outline for cutting the basic shape, a depth pattern indicating the levels of relief, and a shaded pattern indicating texture and shadow.

A Design Sourcebook for Woodcarvers and Other Artists
By Lora S. Irish, Chris Pye, Shawn Cipa

Product Description

The 40 patterns included in this guide for carving green men and wood spirits out of wood are appropriate for carvers of all skill levels. A recent term for a loose archetype—usually the head of a man within nature or a man as part of nature—the green man can be documented as early as A.D. 30 as a Roman architectural accent. The patterns show the green man in his wide range of emotions—happy, sad, miserable, or mischievous—with descriptions of how the wood spirit is anchored to nature not by the imagery of leaves and foliage but by the media on which he is depicted. The wood spirit walking stick patterns show realistic human faces that appear out of the bark or grain of the wood branches or logs in which they are being carved.

Customer Reviews

Wood Spirits and Green Men
I wish I could give this book a 5 star rating. I have now purchased 6 wood carving books, and this one actually gives readers many adorable patterns in large sizes and the permission to reproduce them. It then takes the novice through the steps from drafting on paper, roughing out, and then finalizing and sanding. The high quality of the color plates and the size and detail of the patterns makes this a must have for carvers. The designs are those that will appeal to young and old. Loved the dwarf faces!

Product Description

Beginner carvers are presented with jargon-free instructions for eight skill-building projects in this copiously illustrated guide to carving in the round without a bandsaw. An introductory section acquaints novices with the art of carving and includes information on tool selection and sewing a carving tool kit and apron while shaded patterns help identify which areas of the wood block need to be cut. Since terms are clearly defined, no previous carving knowledge is needed to complete the introductory candlestick-making project and the basic carving skills learned while crafting the candlestick are built upon in the remaining seven tasks, making the projects a rewarding experience.

This was a very interesting book to look at – HOWEVER, the author recommends too many tools, and they are tools that are too expensive for me to buy. Just buying one tool at the prices I found on the Internet would have been my limit.

Product Description

The simple and beautiful art of woodcarving is adapted for children of all ages in this introduction to coaxing shapes and figures from solid blocks of wood. Requiring only a few tools and some inspiration, the projects in this collection are perfectly suited to building the skills it takes to work with wood. Safety and adult supervision are emphasized, but children will be able to complete the age-appropriate designs all by themselves. The graded projects range from carving a name stamp—for the youngest woodworkers—to carving a face—for teenaged craftspeople. The book also touches on computer-aided pattern-making, teaching children who face learning challenges, and methods for instructing kids of each age group—from elementary through high school. With its quick results and cumulative skill-building, learning to carve fosters hand-eye coordination and confidence as young carvers turn out unique handicrafts.

This is a lovely little book and written in a very charming humorous manner. Every page is packed with clear coloured photos. Each project is easy to follow and there are loads of ideas for adapting the basics so that you can make your own stuff. There are lots of little tips about being on the trail and camping too. I love it.
